Multiple Shark Attacks on South Padre Island: Four Swimmers Injured

Independence Day Holiday Brings Tragedy

Four people were injured in multiple shark attacks off South Padre Island on the Fourth of July.

South Padre Island police responded to the first call around 11 am after a severe shark attack was reported in the 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard. Video footage of the shark responsible for the attacks has since emerged, showing the massive predator circling and attacking swimmers.

A String of Attacks

Two of the victims were initially attacked by a single shark, while a third swimmer was later bitten by another shark. A fourth individual sustained injuries while attempting to rescue one of the victims.

The victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment, and their conditions range from serious to critical.

Response and Investigation

The South Padre Island Police Department has closed the affected area and is working with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to investigate the attacks. Authorities are also urging swimmers to stay out of the water in the area until further notice.

Caution and Awareness

While shark attacks are rare in this area, the recent incidents serve as a reminder to be aware of your surroundings when swimming in the ocean. Always swim in designated areas, avoid swimming alone, and be mindful of any unusual activity in the water.

If you encounter a shark, remain calm and swim slowly away. Do not make sudden movements or attempt to touch the shark. If you are attacked, fight back and try to hit the shark on the nose or gills.
