Car Carrier Fremantle Highway Arrives in Eemshaven After Devastating Fire

Damaged Vehicles and Heavy Fuel Oil to be Disposed Of

The Fremantle Highway, a car carrier that caught fire in the North Sea, has arrived in Eemshaven, Netherlands. The vessel will now undergo inspections and repairs, while damaged vehicles and heavy fuel oil are disposed of.

The Fremantle Highway, which is owned by Japanese tonnage provider Shoei Kisen Kaisha and managed by Wallem, was carrying thousands of cars when a fire broke out on July 25, 2023. The fire burned for a week before it was extinguished, causing extensive damage to the ship and its cargo.

The Fremantle Highway was towed to Eemshaven on August 2, 2023. The port is expected to remain closed for several days while the ship is unloaded and repaired. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Fremantle Highway fire is the latest in a series of incidents involving car carriers in recent years. In 2022, the Felicity Ace, a car carrier carrying luxury vehicles, caught fire and sank in the Atlantic Ocean. The following year, the Höegh Xiamen, a car carrier carrying electric vehicles, caught fire and was damaged beyond repair.

The fires on car carriers have raised concerns about the safety of these vessels. Some experts have called for stricter regulations on the design and operation of car carriers.
