Cruise Ship Issues 2019

Cruise Ship Incidents on the Rise

Downward Trend in Significant Operational Incidents

According to data from 2009 to 2019, significant operational incidents involving cruise ships have been on a downward trend, with an average of 0.31 incidents per year. However, anecdotal reports suggest that the number of incidents on ships has increased significantly in recent years.

Increase in Cases on Ships

Despite the overall downward trend in major incidents, there has reportedly been a substantial increase in the number of cases on cruise ships. This could be due to a variety of factors, including increased passenger traffic and changes in ship design and operations.

Cruise Ship Departure Despite Warnings

In a recent incident, a cruise ship carrying over 1370 people departed from a northern Norway harbor despite warnings from local authorities about strong winds and rough seas. The ship later encountered severe weather, leading to a rescue operation.

High Passenger Traffic

The number of passengers transiting through cruise ports has also increased in recent years. In 2019, approximately 16 million travelers passed through one particular port, a significant increase from previous years.
